It Comes Down to Desire

Tomorrow the British & Irish Lions return to the scene of the victorious second test in 1997 and will try and emulate the tenacity and spirit of their forebears. Rumor has it that Ian McGeechan has something special up his sleeve with regards the distribution of the test jerseys. In reality though, this pride of Lions will need no reminder of the task ahead of them and the history, honour and tradition behind them. At the end of the day it all comes down to desire.
The Lions have passed their first test, not with overflowing style, but with full marks. 6 played, 6 won. However, come 2010 and beyond, what will be remembered is the results of the test series. Tomorrow is where the real work begins, and tomorrow climbing the first rung is what counts.
The Lions face a simply superb team - arguably the finest in the world today - but they themselves have, as Jim Telfer would have put it, their own background and pedigree. They've got class across the field and a team spirit that's been lacking on Lions tours of recent years.
Some say that the Boks are undercooked, underprepared, underwary, overconfident etc etc ad infinitum. Come 2 O'Clock tomorrow afternoon, none of it will matter. The team that hits hardest, fights toughest and wants it most will be the winner. The Lions have the huge responsibility of proving to the world that Northern Hemisphere rugby isn't the weakling whipping boy of the South. It's not about the individual, it's about the team, and above everything else I ask for passion. From 1 to 22 the Lions squad has to come out of the blocks like bullets from a gun. They need to play with savvy and control, but in heart and mind all must be left on the pitch.
When they tackle, each Lion should hit his opponent like they talked about his sister, when they attack each Lion should sprint faster than they've ever moved before and when they're tired they should grin and ask for more. It's about desire and it needs to be on tap by the imperial gallon.
Cometh the hour, cometh the Lions.
I'm gutted to say that I'm going to miss tomorrow's game because of a work commitment. It's a friends wedding and I'm the photographer for the day, but my heart will be in Durban and I'll be willing the Lions on something chronic. Hopefully I can stay clear of the media till I get home, and hopefully, come the end of the day I'll be able to sit and watch a special Lions moment. It's so special I dare not say it, but I hope it, and I sign off with the overriding thought: It's all about desire.
