Carstens is the first player from either the Senior or Emerging Springbok squads to be released by PdV ahead of the test series that begins on the 20th June. The Sharks, who finished 6th in this year's Super 14 are likely to be the stiffest test yet for the touring side and have a number of high profile names to watch.
Johann Muller captains the side from the 2nd row, and the Bok, who has 22 caps to his name, was singled out by PdV at the Springbok squad announcement as being a player unlucky not to have made the cut. Likewise, Stefan Terblanche is a name familiar to rugby followers worldwide. The 33yo Springbok has an incredible test record, with 37 caps and an exceptional 0.51 try per match ratio. Terblanche was considered a possible option for the Springboks at fullback, but the management chose to announce a squad without a recognised 15.
Rory Kockott at 9 is another name to watch. The scrum-half has been in scintillating form during the Super 14 and is another of the players considered unlucky not to have made grade for either of the national squads. Jean Deysel at 7 is another name to watch within a strong Sharks pack.
The Sharks will consider the tourists a scalp waiting to be taken after their lucky escape against the Cheetahs and will be firing on all cylinders as the tour swings into town on Wednesday night.
