Welsh winger Leigh Halfpenny has been withdrawn from the Lions squad to face the Sharks this Wednesday due to a suspected recurrence of the thigh injury that delayed the start of his tour.

The Cardiff Blues player had been named on the bench for the game, but now faces a scan to assess the extent of the injury. He suffered a strain at the end of training on Monday and his withdrawal is currently being referred to as a precaution.

"He recovered very well from the last time," said Lions assistant coach Shaun Edwards. "He was doing some extra work at the end of training yesterday and he just felt it strain."

"He was examined by the medical team this morning and was comfortable. However, in order to enable an accurate diagnosis he is currently having a scan," said a Lions spokesman.

"As a preliminary measure he will be unavailable for Wednesday's game and James Hook will take his place on the bench."

In further worrying news for the Lions management, form flanker Stephen Ferris has also gone for a scan after suffering a sore knee in training on Tuesday. We'll have more news on both of these injuries as soon as it is made available.

All the best to both of them and also Martyn Williams who is suffering with a shoulder injury.
